With another chapter of Takeshi Kovac’s life ended. Altered Carbon was created for television by Laeta Kalogridis and based on Richard K. Morgan’s books and debuted on Netflix in 2018. In the first season of the sci-fi show, Joel Kinnaman took over the role of Takeshi with Anthony Mackie for Season 2.
Altered Carbon is set in an environment where humans are inserted in their spine with a stack when they are infants, who carry memories and can be transferred from one body to the next and give theoretically everlasting life. Takeshi is a former rebel-turned soldier who fell in love with the leader of a resistance group trying to restore a natural balance between life and death. Takeshi tracks his girlfriend, Quellcrist Falconer, in season 2 to find him a transformed woman with a vicious vendetta.
Altered Carbon for season 3 has not yet been renewed, although, for Netflix, this is not uncommon. The streaming service usually waits for a renewal decision for its shows, from a few weeks to a few months. The end will possibly expect news about Season 3 of Altered Carbon of April 2020.
The Altered Carbon 2 season, released on Netflix more than two years after the first season, was a long wait. This was due in part to Netflix waiting for a renewal decision; Season 2 of Altered Carbon had not been released until July 2018, five months after the first season.
Also, Actor Anthony Mackie had a busy schedule, with reshoots for Avengers: Endgame up to the end of 2018 and Synchronic shooting for the sci-fi thriller until January 2019. If altered carbon season 3 has similar delays, then fans may have to wait until 2022 for a return from Takeshi, but the mid-to-late date is more likely with a quicker renewal decision.
We should expect Takeshi to wear a new face when he returns to Altered Carbon season 3, as Angelfire incinerated his elite fighting sleeve when he sacrificed his own life to kill the Elder in his sleeve. At first, Takeshi seemed to have left for good, with Takeshi Kovacs Prim ready to become the protagonist of the series. Though, in the final scene of season 2, Poe returns after he’s shut down and learns that his mind contains a raw human DHF. Poe and Dig discuss it, and Dig announces that “strong whiskey should be ready,” stating that DHF is Takeshi.
Poe was present at the final battle against the elderly Carrera but shut down violently shortly before the sacrifice of Takeshi. The last thing he does before disintegration is to write a binding note with a decryption key for the DHF of Takeshi, but it is unclear exactly when the DHF was stored in the memory of Poe. We have to wait for season 3, Altered Carbon, to see how much this Takeshi knows to see what body he’ll turn on next.
