In a show of its strong social responsibility and drive towards community and economic growth, Fifth Third Bank has laid down the start of construction of a new branch in Chicago’s South Side. The launching is traditionally joined by local authorities and representatives of the community and bank, which can be considered an important factor in the bank’s advancement to new areas, unobviously closed for financial services.

The new branch will be opened some time in early part of 2025 at the Chatham community on 79th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. It is estimated that employment opportunities for the new branch are nearly about fifteen full time ones of which efforts would be made to recruit locally. Locally, Fifth Third has worked with various workforce development agencies so that residents can be able to apply for these positions.

Apart from banking products the new branch will become a platform where financial education, information on small business development and youth education will be delivered. This is part of Fifth Third’s overall Community Commitment Plan under which it has committed to invest $2.8 billion in expenditure and lending to the low and moderate income communities of Chicago in the next five years.

The groundbreaking comes at what seems to be an era in which most big banks have started pulling out in an effort to embrace online channel banking solutions. But Fifth Third’s recent move to open more branches in Chicago’s South Side was predicated, of course, by the fact that there is a realization that these communities should not be left entirely to totally digital interactions, which are largely conducted anyway, large swaths of these populations still rely on the physical branch experience.

Local traders and other people have shown what they said was great interest in the new branch. A neighbor barbershop owner Jamal Washington said, “It will be easier for small businesses such as mine to get the services we need from this reputable bank to grow and expand our businesses.”

The project has also received support from community-based organizations like The Greater Chatham Initiative, which is in the process of implementing economic development and creating jobs in the area. The new branch was welcomed by Nedra Sims Fears, the Executive Director of the Initiative which praised Fifth Third’s investment, She noted that, “This new branch is a vital piece of our broader efforts to create a vibrant, sustainable community on the South Side.”

When construction of the new branch is launched, Fifth Third Bank will ensure that contractors and suppliers who work on the branch’s construction are local so as to foster the development of the area’s economy. During construction phase, alone the bank has calculated that the project will create more than $5 million of economic impact for the local economy.

The construction of Fifth Third’s new South Side branch is also a landmark step in the never-ending campaign to correct the unjust state of affairs in Chicago. It is hoped that as the project progresses, it will become the focus of attention of the banking community and community interest groups to follow a good example of equity investment in disadvantaged urban communities.

With this expansion, Fifth Third Bank is expanding its branch network while at the same time underlining itself as a partner in the community rebuilding process.
